This botanic garden was founded in 1940. It is devoted to the collection, display, and preservation of native plants of California. The Garden is divided into 10 major sections that cover the state. These sections range from the Southern California section to the Redwood section, from the Channel Islands section to the Sierra section.
The Garden is noted for its large collections of manzanita, ceanothus, and bunchgrass. Inside the entrance to the Garden is the Visitor Center. Here you can find information about joining the Friends of the Botanic Garden or purchasing The Four Seasons, Journal of the Regional Parks Botanic Garden.
During the winter months, the Botanic Garden sponsors The Wayne Roderick Lecture Series. These free presentations are held in the Visitor Center on Saturday mornings and emphasize ecology and biogeography of native plants in the field.
The Friends of the Botanic Garden publish a newsletter, Manzanita, four times a year. The Friends also sponsor classes and field trips for members and nonmembers throughout the year. In April the Friends hold their annual native plant sale at the Garden. The Friends also oversee the Garden Docent Program, providing training for docents, public tours on weekends, and tours for groups by appointment. Visit the Friends' Web site at www.nativeplants.org.
This is a very special Garden at any time during the year. There is always something happening in the Garden. It is well worth a visit!
